December 10, (THEWILL) – Argentina edged out the Netherlands over penalty shootouts after a thrilling extra-time final match finished in a 2-2 tie, with Emiliano Martinez, helping Argentina defeat the Netherlands by stopping two of their kicks.
Penalties from Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis, were stopped by Martinez before Lautaro Martinez, converted the final of the five penalty kicks to see Argentina advance to a semi-final match against Croatia.
By setting up Nahuel Molina’s first goal and then scoring again from the penalty spot, Lionel Messi appeared to have given Argentina the victory in regular time. However, two late goals from substitute, Wout Weghorst, who came in for Memphis Depay, extended the game past the 90-minute mark.
Enzo Fernandez, who came closest with a 20-yard drive that smacked against the outside of the post in the final minute, was unable to help Argentina win in extra time despite their best efforts. It had to be decided by shootouts.
The Netherlands’ initial two attempts to turn the tide in favour of Argentina were then rescued by Emiliano Martinez, who subsequently assumed the spotlight. But, Enzo Fernandez also failed to score before Lautaro Martinez, buried his penalty to set off wild celebrations. They will face Croatia in Tuesday’s first semi-final, while the Netherlands return home.
