The win made Maresca the first manager ever to win their first seven games in charge of a club, surpassing Pep Guardiola, Carlo Ancelotti and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who won their first six with City, Chelsea and Manchester United respectively.

Only Chelsea in 2005/06 with nine straight wins and Liverpool in 2019/20 with eight have had longer successful runs to start a Premier League campaign.

The Cityzens have defeated the likes of Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Coventry City, Manchester United, Sunderland and Liverpool before this win over Ipswich to set the Premier League record.

Man City have also scored 19 goals in their first seven games of the season to go top of the Premier League table.

It is the first time in 129 years that City have won their first seven games at the start of a league campaign.

Maresca was delighted to see the remarkable record, while praising the players for the feat.

He said: “First of all, I am very happy because it’s a matter of winning games in this business.

“We were able to win seven in a row and what made me very happy was day-by-day with the players, the way they are working and how I can see them improving.

“Today I thought we controlled the game, created chances, and were good off the ball. We are doing well and I think that’s the most important thing.”

Soccer players in black and light-blue kits compete for the ball on a green pitch as a crowded stadium watches from the stands.

Maresca was full of praise for the players following their impressive start to the season.

He concluded: “Absolutely yes but also I understand we give credit to the players. They need to be worried about people inside the club and about me for the credit I give to them.

“And they are not worried about people who judge from outside because they know people trying to judge them; it’s people who are working who want to create a problem but inside I promise the players are happy, they get credit and I give credit to them.”

Man City will return to action against Aston Villa on Saturday at Villa Park.

In the other Premier League matches on Saturday afternoon, Fulham defeated Hull City 1-0, and Liverpool earned a 2-1 win over Brentford thanks to goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak.
