October 27, (THEWILL) – Manchester United defeated Sheriff Tiraspol 3-0 in a routine victory to keep their Europa League last-16 hopes alive with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring to mark his return to the side.
Ronaldo started at Old Trafford, after being benched for the draw against Chelsea because he refused to come on as a late substitution against Tottenham Hotspur on October 19, at Old Trafford.
Diego Dalot and Marcus Rashford, each scored a header to give United a double advantage, and nine minutes from time, Ronaldo sealed the victory and United’s top-two finish in Group E with the third for the Red Devils.
Erik ten Hag’s team now needs to defeat Real Sociedad by two goals next week in order to overtake the La Liga team at the top of the group and avoid a more difficult matchup in the Europa play-off elimination stage.
On Sunday, United and Sheriff will resume their domestic schedules before wrapping up their group-stage campaigns the following week. In the Premier League, United welcomes West Ham, and Sheriff, the Superliga top team, hosts Dacia-Buiucani.
