August 14, (THEWILL) – Manchester United earned a 1-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers to start their English Premier League campaign on a winning note, but the performance left much to be desired.

A second-half goal from Raphael Varane was enough to clinch the three points, although Wolves deserved more based on their energetic display. The match was highly competitive throughout, with Wolves creating the better chances in the first half. Their counterattacking speed caused problems for United, but the finishing touch was lacking. Matheus Cunha hit the post in the second half during an impressive solo run.

United finally broke through in the 76th minute when Bruno Fernandes found Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who crossed for Varane to head home. However, Wolves continued pressing and nearly equalised in stoppage time, appealing for a penalty after a collision between Andre Onana and Sasa Kalajdzic. But the referee waved off the protests after consulting VAR.

In the end, United escaped by the slimmest of margins against a Wolves side invigorated by new manager Gary O’Neil. The Red Devils will need improved performances to meet expectations this season. But for now, the three points provide relief and a solid start under Erik ten Hag.

There was a minor demonstration by United supporters before the match protesting club ownership. But planned protests regarding Mason Greenwood did not materialise beyond a few banners. The club continues weighing his future after concluding an internal investigation. Both teams return to action on Saturday, with United away at Tottenham Hotspur while Wolves host Brighton and Hove Albion.
