February 26, (THEWILL) – Manchester United have emerged victorious in the Carabao Cup final, securing their first trophy under Erik ten Hag with a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.
The Red Devils dominated the game with first-half goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford at Wembley Stadium, outclassing Newcastle, who were competing in their first cup final in the 21st century.
Wout Weghorst had the first decent chance of the game, but his half-volleyed shot was comfortably saved by the Newcastle goalkeeper. Allan Saint-Maximin threatened to conjure up an opportunity for Newcastle, but his shot was saved by David de Gea. Soon after, Man Utd broke the deadlock with a beautiful set-piece delivery from Luke Shaw, and Casemiro headed it into the corner of the net. Ten minutes later, Rashford doubled the lead with a deflected strike on goal.
In the second half, Newcastle tried to press forward with real intent but was unable to threaten De Gea. Fred and Casemiro worked tirelessly to close down the Magpies’ creative players when they occasionally found themselves in dangerous areas. In the end, Newcastle failed to reduce their arrears despite Dan Burn’s missed chance and substitute Jacob Murphy’s near-miss effort.
Man Utd will now focus on their next challenge, which is to secure a place in the FA Cup quarter-final by hosting West Ham on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Newcastle must shift their focus back to the English Premier League as they visit Manchester City on Saturday.
