June 30, (THEWILL) – Lisandro Martinez had become Erik ten Hag’s first priority target for Manchester United’s defence.
The 24-year-old Argentinian, who Ten Hag signed to Ajax in 2019, has drawn significant interest from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal, who have made many proposals for the player, the most recent of which is for €40 million plus add-ons. While United have not yet submitted a bid of their own, they have made it clear that they are interested with Ajax holding out for a fee of €50 million.
Given the capacity of the clubs interested in Martinez, the Dutch champions are confident in the anticipation that one of the suitors will meet their valuation of the player. After making significant progress on agreements for Dutch internationals Frenkie de Jong and Tyrell Malacia, who play for Barcelona and Ajax, respectively, Ten Hag and United have turned their attention to finding a centre half. Both transactions are now being finalised, and according to United, they should be completed soon.
While United is still interested in Martinez’s Ajax teammate Antony, Christian Eriksen has received a contract offer from the club and the club is awaiting his decision. His contract with Brentford has expired, but he has the option to extend it with the west London club.
A general agreement for De Jong aside, Antony has now become United’s next priority target for the upcoming summer transfer window, but Arsenal’s interest in Martinez has forced United to look in that direction as well.
