July 28, (THEWILL) – Manchester City have officially confirmed the departure of winger Riyad Mahrez, who is set to join Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli.
Mahrez, who joined City from Leicester City in 2018, had a glittering spell at the Etihad Stadium, winning four English Premier League titles and lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy as part of last season’s treble. The Algerian international made a significant impact during his five years with City, tallying 78 goals and 59 assists in 236 appearances across all competitions.
Mahrez thanked the club and its fans, saying: “To play for Manchester City has been an honour and privilege.” Club Director at the Etihad Txiki Begiristain acknowledged Mahrez’s substantial contributions to City’s successes, highlighting his exceptional skills and technique as a winger in world football.
THEWILL recalls that Mahrez faced disappointment as he was left out of the squad for both the UCL and FA Cup finals, which reportedly left him feeling hurt. However, this setback did not diminish his achievements at the club, and he leaves with a wealth of wonderful memories.
Notably, Mahrez’s move to Al Ahli will see him join forces with Edouard Mendy and Roberto Firmino, with rumours of a potential acquisition of Newcastle winger, Allan Saint-Maximin, also circulating. Still, Mahrez’s departure marks the end of a remarkable era at Manchester City, where his on-field talent and contributions were instrumental in the club’s triumphs.
