November 10, (THEWILL) – In keeping with their recent poor form, Chelsea was defeated 2-0 by Manchester City on Wednesday, resulting in their elimination from the third round of the EFL Cup.
For the heavyweight clash at the Etihad Stadium, both teams made seven lineup changes, with Chelsea having the better first-half performance.
Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez scored in a matter of seconds early in the second half to give City a comfortable margin after Christian Pulisic and Lewis Hall missed good opportunities.
The Blues, the beaten finalists from the previous season, were eliminated early thanks to Pep Guardiola’s City, who introduced Kalvin Phillips for his first appearance since mid-September.
On Saturday, City will play its final pre-World Cup English Premier League match against Brentford. On the same day, Chelsea will play away at Newcastle.
