January 18, (THEWILL) – In a hard-fought match at the sold-out Nelson Mandela Stadium in Algiers on Tuesday evening, Algeria secured a 1-0 victory over Ethiopia in the TotalEnergies African Nations Champions.

The win solidifies Algeria’s lead in Group A and effectively books them a spot in the knockout stages of the competition. They were good for it because they dominated possession in the early minutes of the match, but Ethiopia kept them at bay, preventing them from reaching dangerous positions.

Despite several attempts on goal, including a stinging effort by Ahmed Kendouci and a close-range header from Mezieane Tahar, the first half ended goalless.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 52nd minute when Aimen Mahious scored the only goal of the fixture, improvising to control a corner kick and fire it into the net. Ethiopia struggled all the more for a chance to equalise but were otherwise unable to break through Algeria’s defence.

With the victory, Algeria will face Mozambique in their final Group A match, while Ethiopia will look to earn a win against a struggling Libya team.
