Madrid Derby Ends 2-0 In Real’s Advantage, Atletico Stay Fourth

December 13, (THEWILL) – With a comfortable 2-0 Madrid derby victory over Atletico Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid regained their eight-point advantage at the top of La Liga and made a strong title-chasing statement in the process.

The visitors had chances and were in control for long stretches of the derby, but they were unable to capitalise on their advantage as Real Madrid consolidated their grip on the Spanish top flight table.

While Atleti started well, Real Madrid did the scoring with the first goal registering after only 16 minutes of first half football. Vinicius Junior broke away and crossed for Karim Benzema, who smashed a well-hit finish past Jan Oblak on the full volley.

Thibaut Courtois saved a freekick from Antoine Griezmann and Atletico Madrid failed to produce anything against a Real Madrid side content to defend their lead than jeopardise it especially with the constant threat of Griezmann.

Unfortunately for the hosts, Benzema was unable to continue a minute into the second half due to injury and was replaced by Luca Jovic. Atleti also brought on Joao Felix and Thomas Lemar.

The visitors continued to push for an equaliser glad to not have to deal with the Benzema threat, but this only served to allow Real to score a second through Marco Asensio.

Diego Simeone introduced Luis Suarez in to give Atletico extra firepower, but even he could not save his club as Real Madrid won their tenth consecutive match in all competitions.

This victory restores Madrid’s eight-point lead over Atletico Madrid at the top of La Liga. They have won their past 11 games in a row and will face Cadiz next. Atletico Madrid has already lost back-to-back league games, although they remain in fourth place. Then it is on to Sevilla next.
