december 23, (THEWILL) – Newcastle United slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat away at Luton Town on Saturday afternoon, making it three losses in their last four English Premier League matches. The result leaves the Magpies struggling for form as they dropped to seventh place on 29 points.
Luton took the lead in the 25th minute when winger Andros Townsend, netting his maiden goal for the Hatters since joining in the summer, headed home from Ross Barkley’s flick-on at a corner kick. Barkley almost doubled the hosts’ advantage shortly after, hammering a powerful strike against the underside of the crossbar.
Alexander Isak thought he had equalised for Newcastle midway through the second half, but his neat finish from Miguel Almiron’s assist was ruled out for offside after a VAR review. The decision left Newcastle frustrated as they were subsequently forced to defend wave after wave of Luton counter attacks.
Despite creating several promising opportunities on the break themselves, Luton held on for a vital three points that lifts them to 18th in the table on 12 points from 17 matches. The result will come as a major relief for the struggling Hertfordshire side after a difficult start to life in the top flight in the 2023/2024 campaign.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will be concerned by his team’s lack of attacking threat and will be hoping to quickly regain momentum with an improved performance in their next fixture.
