Lukaku Takes Wage Cut As Inter Confirm Loan Return

June 29, (THEWILL) – With a season-long loan from Chelsea completed, Romelu Lukaku has made a sensational return to former Italian champions, Inter Milan, agreeing to a pay cut to hasten the process.

The striker had only recently moved to the Blues from Inter in a record-breaking £97.5 million transfer, but things quickly went south as he got back to Stamford Bridge owing to poor play, injury and COVID. To make matters worse, he gave the now-famous interview to the Italian media in which he declared his love for the Nerazzurri.

His place was further made untenable as a result of damaged rapport with Chelsea’s supporters and head coach Thomas Tuchel. Lukaku made it apparent that he wanted to go back to San Siro, and an exit was thought to be the wisest course of action for everyone involved.

In a statement published on the team’s social media, Inter has now officially announced that the 29-year-old has rejoined them. Chelsea clarified that the agreement was for a loan of one year. Despite discussions about a buyout option, a buyout requirement, and an extra year.

The two clubs settled on a one-year loan, with Inter paying an initial cost of €8 million that may increase to €10 million with add-ons. Lukaku even agreed to take a wage cut to resolve an Italian tax issue that could have complicated the process.
