September 24, (THEWILL) – Atalanta cruised to a comfortable 2-0 win over Cagliari at the Gewiss Stadium, on Sunday afternoon.
The victory came after last week’s disappointing 3-2 defeat away to Fiorentina. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side maintained their excellent home form, having now won their opening three competitive matches in Bergamo this season. Goals either side of halftime sealed the three points against Cagliari.
Milan loanee, Charles De Ketelaere, thought he had opened the scoring in the 23rd minute but his effort was ruled out for offside. However, Atalanta got their deserved lead 10 minutes later when De Ketelaere turned provider, teeing up Nigerian counterpart Ademola Lookman for a simple tap-in.
Cagliari went into the second half looking to equalise but could not create any openings to do that. Atalanta seemed content with their lead but still threatened on the break. One such counter-attack led to their second goal in the 76th minute – Luis Muriel played in Mario Pasalic who smashed the ball in.
The midfielder’s goal secured another home win for Atalanta and condemned Cagliari to defeat on their return to Serie A. Gasperini’s side move up to sixth place ahead of Wednesday’s clash away at Hellas Verona.
