Lookman Nets Brace As Nigeria Progresses To AFCON Quarter-Finals

January 27, (THEWILL) – Ademola Lookman was the hero for Nigeria on Saturday night, scoring two goals to lead the Super Eagles to an impressive 2-0 victory over Africa Cup of Nations favourites Cameroon. The win books Nigeria’s place in the tournament’s quarter-finals, where they will face Angola.

Despite Cameroon’s status as five-time AFCON champions, Nigeria controlled proceedings for much of the affair. An early disallowed goal from Semi Ajayi set the tone before Lookman clinically finished past Fabrice Ondoa in the 36th minute via a Victor Osimhen assist. The Atalanta striker then sealed the result late on, redirecting home Calvin Bassey’s cross.

In between, there were chances for both sides to add to the scoring. Osimhen and Ola Aina went close for Nigeria, while Nouhou Tolo blasted over the bar for Cameroon. There was also late drama involving Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who was stretchered off after a collision.

The result will be hugely disappointing for Cameroon boss Rigobert Song, whose side were lacklustre and failed to match Nigeria’s quality. Meanwhile, Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro will be delighted to have claimed such a result against esteemed opposition.

Nigeria now go on to face Angola in the quarter-finals this coming Friday. If they can maintain this form, Peseiro’s men will fancy their chances of booking a spot in the AFCON semi-finals. However, they will be taking nothing for granted against an Angola side seeking their own piece of history.
