Liverpool To Appeal Jones’ Sending Off In 2-1 Loss To Spurs

October 02, (THEWILL) – Liverpool are set to appeal the red card shown to Curtis Jones in Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur. Jones was initially booked by referee, Simon Hooper, for a 26th minute challenge on Spurs’ Yves Bissouma before the decision was upgraded to a sending off, following a VAR review.

The 22-year-old is now facing a three-match ban that would rule him out of upcoming games against Brighton and Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest. However, Liverpool are hoping to get the suspension overturned ahead of Sunday’s trip to the AMEX Community Stadium.

Jones was dismissed after Hooper consulted the pitch-side monitor on the advice of VAR operator Darren England. Replays of the incident were shown inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, sparking an angry reaction from the home supporters.

Reds boss, Jurgen Klopp, later claimed he did not feel Jones deserved a red card for the tackle. “Probably everybody here thinks it’s a clear red card, I see that different, just because I played football and most of you probably didn’t,” he said after the match.

Liverpool will now go through the formal appeals process as they attempt to get Jones’ suspension rescinded. The FA could decide to uphold or overturn the sending off ahead of the Brighton fixture.
