November 27, (THEWILL) – Diogo Jota scored twice as Liverpool defeated Southampton 4-0 at Anfield on Saturday to keep the pressure on table-topping Chelsea.
Sadio Mane and Andy Robertson worked together to set up the former Wolves attacker, who put them ahead after just two minutes.
Half an hour later, on the opposite flank, Mohamed Salah exchanged passes with Jordan Henderson before slipping a ball across the box for a tap-in and Jota’s second goal.
The game was effectively over five minutes before halftime after Thiago Alcantara drove into the area and saw his shot deflected past Alex McCarthy by Lyanco.
Virgil van Dijk put the icing on a virtuoso performance after he was allowed to meet Trent Alexander-Arnold’s corner with a half-volley that sneaked past Southampton goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Liverpool are now just a point behind Chelsea, who play Manchester United tomorrow. Southampton are 14th, five points above the relegation zone.
This victory has ensured the 2021/2022 campaign remains exciting and a three-horse race between Chelsea, Liverpool, and Manchester City. The three teams have been head and shoulder above the rest of the competition, attacking with intent and frugal with letting in the goals.
