Liverpool Seek Clarity After VAR Controversy In 2-1 Loss To Spurs

October 01, (THEWILL) – Liverpool have demanded answers from the Professional Game Match Officials Board (PGMOL) after Luis Diaz’s goal against Tottenham was wrongly disallowed for offside. The Reds fell to a 2-1 defeat at Spurs on Saturday, but believe the result could have been different if Diaz’s first-half strike had stood.

The goal was ruled out after the linesman raised his flag, despite replays clearly showing Diaz was played onside by Spurs defender, Cristian Romero. The decision was still not overturned by VAR as referee Simon Hooper blew his whistle to restart play after checking with video assistant Darren England.

In a statement, Liverpool said it was “unacceptable” that the “correct application of the laws of the game did not occur” when the goal was reviewed. The club believes the outcome “should be established only by the review and with full transparency”, raising concerns over the “reliability of future decision-making”.

The statement confirmed Liverpool will now “explore the range of options available” as they seek answers from PGMOL over the errors made in disallowing Diaz’s strike. PGMOL accepted there were significant human errors made, acknowledging failures in the VAR process on Saturday, as THEWILL reported.

With the technology brought in to rectify mistakes, Liverpool want to ensure this situation “cannot occur again”. The club feel the integrity of the sport was undermined by the wrong decision and lack of intervention from officials. They believe greater transparency and accountability are required from PGMOL over VAR use going forward. The Reds now await a full response after demanding escalation of the controversial events at Tottenham.
