February 14, (THEWILL) – Liverpool returned to their winning ways by defeating Merseyside rivals, Everton 2-0 at Anfield on Monday night.
This much-needed victory comes after recent losses to Wolverhampton Wanderers and Brighton and Hove Albion that had affected the morale of the Reds. On Monday, though, goals from Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo were enough to secure the win for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
In the first half, Liverpool dominated the play and created several opportunities, but Gakpo was unable to convert the first quality chance. However, a clinical breakaway strike from Salah opened the scoring for the hosts, capitalising on a mispositioned Jordan Pickford. The Reds continued to threaten with the pace of Darwin Nunez causing problems for the Everton defense.
The second goal came from a swift counter-attack, as Andy Robertson found Salah who then passed the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold. Alexander-Arnold’s low cross was allowed to penetrate and found Gakpo who steered the ball into the back of the net. Despite several late attempts from Everton, Liverpool saw out the game and now sit ninth in the Premier League table. Meanwhile, Everton remains in 18th place.
Liverpool will travel to Newcastle United on Saturday, while Everton will face Leeds United at Goodison Park.
