August 19, (THEWILL) – Liverpool secured their first win of the English Premier League campaign with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth at Anfield.
The visitors took a stunning third-minute lead through Antoine Semenyo, but Liverpool responded with goals from Luis Diaz, Mo Salah, and Diogo Jota. Salah’s goal was his 187th for Liverpool, moving him ahead of Steven Gerrard and into fifth in the club’s scoring charts.
Liverpool’s victory was made all the more impressive by the fact that they had to overcome a torrid start and a red card for Alexis Mac Allister, who was harshly shown a straight red for catching Christie on the foot just before the hour mark. However, Liverpool scored their third goal moments later through Jota, who rifled in a rebound to settle the match.
Despite the chaotic opening few minutes, Liverpool looked much more settled in the second half and adopted a more conservative approach to see the game out. The hosts were fortunate they had not dug themselves an even deeper hole in the opening minutes, which illustrated the work still ahead as Jurgen Klopp reshapes his side after a summer is midfield exits.
On Saturday, Bournemouth play hosts to Tottenham Hotspur while Liverpool are away to high-flying Newcastle the following day.
