August 08, (THEWILL) — Liverpool have reportedly reached an agreement with Barcelona to sign Uruguay international Ronald Araújo on a season-long loan, in a surprise move as the club look to address a growing defensive crisis ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the two clubs have reached a verbal agreement over the 27-year-old defender, with Barcelona sporting director Deco giving the green light for the deal.
Romano reported that the relevant documents are expected to be signed shortly, with the agreement also including an option for Liverpool to buy Araújo permanently at the end of the loan spell.
The purchase option, however, will not be mandatory, allowing Liverpool to assess the defender before deciding whether to commit to a permanent transfer.
The move comes at a crucial time for Liverpool, who have been hit by injuries in central defence during pre-season.
Joe Gomez is currently sidelined with a muscle problem, while Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are also unavailable.
That situation has left Virgil van Dijk as the only fully fit senior centre-back in the squad with Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Newcastle United scheduled for August 23.
Araújo’s arrival would therefore provide manager Andoni Iraola with an experienced defensive option capable of immediately strengthening his backline.
The Uruguay international has spent much of his senior career at Barcelona, where he has established himself as a powerful and versatile defender.
He can operate at centre-back but has also been used at right-back, giving Liverpool additional flexibility.
Araújo made 24 La Liga appearances last season as Barcelona claimed the Spanish league title.

During his time at the Catalan club, he has also won two Copa del Rey trophies and three Spanish Super Cups, alongside multiple league titles.
At international level, the defender has earned 27 caps for Uruguay and was part of the country’s squad at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The move represents a significant change in direction for Liverpool, who have been heavily linked with attacking reinforcements this summer, including Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola.
However, with injuries threatening to leave Iraola short of options at the back, Araújo’s loan could prove to be one of the most important deals of Liverpool’s transfer window.
The defender’s recent role at Barcelona has generated mixed reactions, with some supporters questioning whether he remains at the level he showed earlier in his career.
Others believe his physical strength, aerial ability, experience and versatility could make him particularly well suited to English football.
For Liverpool, the temporary nature of the deal also limits the risk.
