July 31, (THEWILL) – English football resumed with the Community Shield on Saturday, as Liverpool defeated Manchester City 3-1, thanks to a game-winning header from new-boy, Darwin Nunez, to cap off a remarkable debut.
The first trophy of the year went to the Merseysiders after an exciting game at Leicester’s King Power Stadium that ended with the Uruguayan international nodding home from close range in stoppage time.
The goal came with 20 minutes remaining, after substitute, Julian Alvarez, had cancelled out Trent Alexander-Arnold’s first-half goal. Then, Reds’ icon Mohamed Salah put Jurgen Klopp’s side back in front from the penalty spot in the 83rd minute.
Nunez’s injury-time goal, which finished the fixture as a contest, ensured that Klopp has now won all of the top English domestic awards during his career as Liverpool gaffer.
When the opportunity presented itself, Haaland sadly was unable to produce his debut goal. He finished his difficult first competitive tie by hitting the crossbar in the final seconds.
