February 18, (THEWILL) – Liverpool boosted their chances of securing a top-four finish with a 2-0 victory against Newcastle United.
Newcastle, who had only lost to Liverpool in the league at St James’ Park in the past year, saw their hopes of a comeback fade after Nick Pope was sent off. The defeat leaves Newcastle in fourth place, while Liverpool moved six points away from the top four.
Liverpool took the lead in the 10th minute, as Darwin Nunez scored his first English Premier League goal since November. Shortly after, Cody Gakpo made it 2-0 with a sublime finish. Newcastle responded well to Pope’s sending-off, hitting the crossbar twice and forcing Liverpool’s Alisson to make some crucial saves.
However, Liverpool managed to keep a clean sheet and secure all three points. Liverpool’s next challenge is a UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash against Real Madrid, while Newcastle will face Manchester United in the EFL Cup final at Wembley next Sunday.
The victory will give Liverpool confidence going into their upcoming matches and could prove to be a turning point in their season.
