December 21, (THEWILL) – Liverpool and Chelsea are on a collision course to meet in the final of the 2023/2024 Carabao Cup after comfortably winning their respective quarter-final ties. Liverpool thrashed West Ham United 5-1 at Anfield, while Chelsea needed penalties to get past Newcastle United after a 1-1 draw.
The Reds put on an attacking masterclass against the Hammers, with goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah and a Curtis Jones brace sealing the comprehensive victory. Chelsea left it late as Mykhailo Mudryk’s last minute equaliser forced penalties, which the Blues won to progress.
In the semi-final, Championship club, Middlesbrough will face Chelsea, while Liverpool were drawn against Fulham. Middlesbrough manager, Michael Carrick, is aiming to lead his side to a historic final, having dispatched League One’s Port Vale 3-0 in the previous round. Fulham matched Chelsea in needing spot kicks to eliminate Everton.
The semi-final first legs take place the week commencing January 8, 2024, with the returns on the week starting January 22. Should Liverpool and Chelsea avoid upsets as expected, it would set up a repeat of the 2022 campaign final which Chelsea won on penalties.
With the Reds and Blues in scintillating goal-scoring form, a high-scoring two-legged tie could be on the cards as the giants of English football battle for the first domestic trophy of the 2023/2024 season.
