Liverpool Beat Arsenal 2-0; Qualify For Carabao Cup Final Against Chelsea

January 21, (THEWILL) – On Thursday night, Liverpool defeated Arsenal to book their place in the Carabao Cup final.

Gabriel Martinelli caused issues down the left flank for the visitors, forcing Jurgen Klopp’s side back. Caoimhin Kelleher tipped Alexandre Lacazette’s diving free kick against the crossbar after Bukayo Saka was fouled on the edge of the area, and the Gunners were almost rewarded just five minutes later.

Before the Reds took the lead against the run of play after 19 minutes, Joel Matip had a tap-in disallowed for offside. Diogo Jota, who collected Trent Alexander-pass, Arnold’s nutmegged Takehiro Tomiyasu, and blasted a low, mis-hit shot past Aaron Ramsdale, put up a fine individual performance.

After being picked out by Albert Sambi Lokonga’s brilliant pass over the top, Lacazette squandered a great chance to equalise early in the second period, lifting his effort far over the bar. Kaide Gordon, a youngster on the opposite end, squandered an even better chance two minutes later, skying a shot in acres of space inside the box.

Just before the hour mark, Liverpool’s substitute Ibrahima Konate’s header came back off the post, then Takumi Minamino’s goal-bound effort was blocked by Ben White, and Andy Robertson struck a shot across the box that went wide.

In the 77th minute, Alexander-Arnold and Jota combined once more to double their lead. Jota superbly handled the England international’s long pass on the chest and lifted a magnificent finish over the onrushing Ramsdale. The strike was first called out due to offside, but VAR overruled the judgement.

By that point, Arsenal had run out of gas, but Martinelli came near with a superb half-volley that went over the bar.

Even though Thomas Partey had returned early from the Africa Cup of Nations, he was sent off just minutes after being introduced as a late challenge on Fabinho, earned the Ghanaian a second yellow card and a quicker shower than the rest.

On February 27, Liverpool will therefore meet co-finalist Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium.
