September 21, (THEWILL) – The England women’s national football team has reached an agreement with the Football Association (FA), over performance-related bonuses, ending a long-standing dispute.
England captain Millie Bright confirmed that “positive conversations” took place after the recent Women’s World Cup, where England finished runners-up. She said the discussions covered more than just bonus payments and were focused on “building a new structure” to advance the women’s game.
The bonus issue had been unresolved before and during the World Cup, despite England making the final. But Bright said the FA and players have now come to a resolution following “extremely positive” talks. THEWILL recalls that Nigeria’s Super Falcons had a similar dispute with the Football Federation with no resolution in sight.
Lionesses’ Manager Sarina Wiegman welcomed the agreement, saying it provides clarity moving forward. She acknowledged conversations had to be put on hold for the World Cup but good connections were maintained throughout.
The Lionesses, who made history by winning the Euro 2022 competition, start their UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign imminently. They face Scotland on Friday to be followed by a match against the Netherlands next week.
