August 27, (THEWILL) – Robert Lewandowski scored his first goal for Barcelona on Sunday, to give the Catalan club a thrilling 4-3 victory away against Villarreal.
The Polish striker pounced on a rebound in the 71st minute to put Barcelona ahead after a chaotic first half saw four goals scored. Barcelona raced out to a 2-0 lead inside 15 minutes through goals from Gavi and Frenkie De Jong. However, Villarreal stormed back with two goals before half-time from Juan Foyth and Alexander Sorloth to level the half at 2-2.
The frenetic pace continued after the break as Villarreal went ahead through Alex Baena’s strike. Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez brought on Ferran Torres in the 63rd minute and the substitute made an immediate impact to equalise just five minutes later.
That set the stage for Lewandowski to grab the winner, tapping in a rebound after Lamine Yamal’s shot hit the post. It was a vital three points for Barcelona, though the manner of the performance left doubts about their defense.
Nevertheless, Lewandowski provided the cutting edge Barcelona needed to get their second La Liga win of the current campaign. The veteran striker will now look to build on this momentum in the coming weeks.
