LeBron James’s Son Exits USC, Declares For NBA Draft

April 06, (THEWILL) – University of Southern California (USC), basketball star Bronny James, son of NBA legend LeBron James, has announced his decision to enter the 2024 NBA Draft while also declaring for the NCAA transfer portal. The 19-year-old made the announcement on his Instagram page on Friday.

James, a former four-star recruit, played in 25 games for the Trojans this past season, making six starts and averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. His freshman campaign was marred by a cardiac arrest incident during a summer workout, which kept him sidelined for the team’s overseas trip and the start of fall practices.

“I’ve had a year with some ups and downs but all added to growth for me as a man, student and athlete”, James wrote in his announcement. “I’ve made the decision to enter the NBA Draft while maintaining my college eligibility and will also be entering the NCAA transfer portal. Thank you to USC for an amazing freshman year and as always thankful for my family, friends, doctors, athletic trainers and fans for their support.”

James’ draft stock remains uncertain, with the 2024 class considered one of the weaker top-end groups in recent memory. He could be a potential second-round pick, but keeping his name in the draft while also exploring transfer options will allow him to gather feedback and make the best decision for his professional future.

With the departure of James, as well as the transfers of star wing Kobe Johnson to crosstown rival UCLA and the likely NBA departure of forward Collier, new USC coach Eric Musselman faces a significant rebuilding job in his first season leading the Trojans.
