August 21, (THEWILL) – In an entertaining CAF Champions League first leg clash, Al Ahli Benghazi battled to a 4-3 victory over Nigerian Premier League winners, Enyimba International, on Sunday.
Despite scoring three vital away goals, the People’s Elephant were undone by a late strike from the hosts. Enyimba started brightly and took an early lead through veteran Mbaoma Chijioke. However, two goals, including an own-goal, in quick succession saw the Libyans go into halftime with a 2-1 advantage. Enyimba refused to give up and equalised in the 59th minute through Eze Ekwutoziam.
The match continued to swing back and forth as Al Ahli went ahead again in the 75th minute. With just four minutes left, Murphy Ndukwu drew Enyimba level to make it 3-3. Heartbreakingly for the visitors, Al Ahli scored deep in stoppage time to claim the win.
While disappointed with the result, Enyimba will be encouraged by their attacking display. The two teams will meet again next weekend in Nigeria for the decisive second leg. A victory could see Enyimba through to the next round against either Coton Sport or ASEC Mimosas.
