November 11, (THEWILL) – Middlesbrough strengthened their play-off ambitions with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Championship leaders, Leicester City, at the Riverside Stadium. A brilliant free-kick from Leeds loanee Sam Greenwood with just 7 minutes remaining proved the difference between the two sides in an evenly-matched encounter.
The result leaves Leicester top of the Championship only on goal difference after Ipswich Town’s win against Swansea. It was a second consecutive 1-0 defeat for the Foxes after losing to Leeds United last week.
In a game of few clear-cut chances, both sides had opportunities to take the lead. Leicester controlled possession for long spells but found Middlesbrough’s defence difficult to break down.
The best chances fell to Leicester’s Kelechi Iheanacho and Middlesbrough’s Josh Coburn in a goalless first half. After the break, the away side continued to dominate but found Boro keeper Seny Dieng in inspired form.
Just as it looked like Leicester would claim a point, Greenwood’s stunning set piece stole the headlines. His free-kick flew into the top corner giving Leicester keeper Mads Hermansen no chance.
The victory lifts Middlesbrough into the playoff places as manager Michael Carrick’s side continue their promotion push. Meanwhile, Leicester boss Enzo Maresca will be concerned by back-to-back defeats ahead of the international break.
