October 06, (THEWILL) – Gernot Rohr is concerned about Paul Onuachu’s fitness ahead of Nigeria’s 2022 World Cup qualifying encounter against Central African Republic on Thursday.
The former FC Midtjylland striker has continued where he left off last season, scoring 11 goals in 14 appearances for Racing Genk in all competitions.
After suffering a small ankle injury while practising at the hotel on Tuesday morning, Onuachu did not engage in full training during the Super Eagles’ first training session on grass.
Rohr did not want to take any chances with the centre forward, so he scheduled a private session with the Super Eagles’ physiotherapists for Tuesday evening.
After observing Onuachu during this evening’s training at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, the manager will decide whether he will face Cape Verde.
In the Super Eagles’ last two 2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, the 27-year-old was an impact substitute, scoring against the Republic of Benin and Lesotho after coming off the bench.
Former Liverpool striker Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been prolific for Bundesliga’s Union Berlin this season, is expected to provide insurance for Victor Osimhen and Kelechi Iheanacho if Onuachu is not cleared to play by the medical team.
