June 12, (THEWILL) – Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has conceded that the club’s finances were in a “terminal” state when he took over, but that work is still being done to improve things.
From 2003 to 2010, Laporta served as president of Barça, overseeing one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. After that, Sandro Rosell served as president until 2014, when Josep Maria Bartomeu took over, leaving Barcelona in financial disaster by the time he left in 2020.
Now, he and his board of directors have helped the club get out of financial trouble, though there is still work to be done. He said: “When we arrived over a year ago, the club was in a terminal [financial] situation. We have restructured our debt, we have saved on financial costs, we have controlled our expenditure and we have increased our revenue.”
At a meeting later this week, Laporta hopes that Barcelona board members will agree measures to help raise more money and enhance the club’s economy. “If these financial operations are approved by our members, it will be good news for us. We will balance our books sooner than we expected.”
Barcelona is still interested in signing Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski, while free-agent signings Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie are anticipated to go through despite the club’s financial difficulties.
