August 27, (THEWILL) — The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has lost its General Secretary, Emmanuel Ugboaja, a veteran trade unionist and lawyer, who spent more than three decades in organised labour, following his death at the age of 60 after a prolonged illness.
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, disclosed the development to members of the Congress’ National Executive Council (NEC) during its meeting in Enugu, Enugu State, following a letter from the late labour leader’s family.
Details surrounding his death remained sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
Born on May 15, 1966, Ugboaja obtained a law degree from the University of Calabar in 1987. He initially practised law privately for about four years before entering the trade union movement in 1993.
Ugboaja became the fifth General Secretary of the NLC in 2019, succeeding Peter Ozo-Eson, and remained one of the key figures in the labour centre’s engagements on issues affecting Nigerian workers.
The NLC’s historical records describe him as the first Nigerian lawyer to work full-time for a trade union, a distinction that reflected the combination of legal training and industrial-relations expertise he brought to the labour movement.
Ugboaja began his major union career with the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees (NUCFRLANMPE), an affiliate of the NLC.
He rose through the ranks and served as the union’s General Secretary between 2000 and 2005.

Ugboaja’s career extended beyond conventional trade union administration. Between 2006 and 2009, he served as Coordinator, Advocacy and Mobilisation, at the Alliance for Credible Elections, a civil-society organisation focused on electoral issues.
He subsequently returned to the NLC Secretariat in 2009, where he continued his rise through the labour centre.
He also participated in major national political and constitutional reform processes. In 2005, Ugboaja was a delegate to the Political and Constitutional Reform Conference convened under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. He later participated in the 2014 National Conference convened under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Rise To NLC General Secretary
Before his emergence as General Secretary, Ugboaja served as Principal Assistant General Secretary of the NLC and headed its Industrial Relations and Organising department.
In 2019, he emerged through a competitive selection process to succeed the retiring Peter Ozo-Eson. The NLC National Executive Council ratified his appointment at its meeting in Kano on August 21, 2019, with the appointment taking effect immediately.
