SAN FRANCISCO, September 12, (THEWILL) – Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, the governor of Kwara State, says he will host the 1994 Super Eagles team to formally thank them for promoting the country and will also use the event to keep the memory of late Super Eagles striker, Rashidi Yekini alive.

Yekini helped Nigeria qualify for her first ever appearance at the football fiesta in 1994 and also scored the country’s first goal at the tournament.

THEWILL had earlier reported the governor’s decision to rename the Kwara State Sports Complex Stadium after Yekini.

Governor Abdulrazaq disclosed his intention of hosting the US 94 Super Eagles squad during his recent visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare.

He also stated that he was an ardent follower of the USA ‘94 Super Eagles squad.

He said: “I was at the stadium in the US when Daniel Amokachi scored what seemed to be the best goal against Greece. It was quite memorable for me as an ardent lover of the game of football. After that goal, I fell in love with Jersey “Number 14” which Daniel Amokachi aka “The Bull”, wore.

“After the tournament, I knew it would be difficult to produce these sets of great and committed footballers.”

Abdulrazaq further disclosed that he looks forward to hosting the USA ‘94 Squad in Ilorin, as this will enable the state to relive the memory of late striker, Yekini who is from Ira Local Area of Kwara State.
