February 29, (THEWILL) – Liverpool earned a convincing 3-0 victory over Southampton in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday night. The win extends the Reds’ unbeaten run against the Saints in the competition to six matches dating back to March 1925.
Jurgen Klopp fielded a youthful side, looking to build on the club’s EFL Cup success. Southampton posed an early threat, with efforts hitting the woodwork and being cleared off the line.
Liverpool slowly gained control, with Harvey Elliott testing the goalkeeper before Lewis Koumas opened the scoring in the 44th minute courtesy of a deflected strike.
Southampton regrouped at half-time but could not find an equaliser despite some dangerous forays. Liverpool were more clinical with chances at the other end, as Jayden Danns netted his first senior goal in the 71st minute after a delightful assist from Elliott. Danns was involved again in the third goal, slotting home a rebound after the goalkeeper had saved Conor Bradley’s initial shot.
The 3-0 scoreline sets up a mouthwatering FA Cup quarter-final clash with rivals Manchester United next month. While disappointed with the result, Southampton manager Russell Martin will be encouraged by periods of promise from his youthful side.
