January 20, (THEWILL) – Sebastian Korda pulled off a shock victory over Daniil Medvedev at the Australian Open, defeating the Russian 7-6(7) 6-3 7-6(4) in the third round.
Medvedev, a losing finalist in Melbourne for the past two years, was broken in his opening service game and a further two times in the first set as he was ultimately pushed to a tie-break by the American, who was able to seize the advantage.
Korda’s early break in the second set put him in control and he refused to look back as he grabbed a two-set lead.
Medvedev showed some of the form that elevated him to number one in the world 12 months earlier to come back and force another tie-break in the third set, but Korda held his nerve as he had done throughout by dictating terms. He advances to the last 16 where he will face Hubert Hurkacz.
In reference to his father, Petr, winning the Australian Open and his sisters, Nelly and Jessica, winning the Australian Open golf tournament, Korda said “I love playing in Australia, my family loves playing in Australia so it is awesome.”
