February 17, (THEWILL) – Liverpool Manager, Jurgen Klopp, has given an update on Virgil van Dijk’s return to the team after the defender’s lengthy injury layoff.
Speaking to the media, Klopp said: “Yesterday he looked absolutely ready. I think today he will look the same, and we will make a decision.”
Klopp’s comments will come as a huge relief to Liverpool fans, who have missed the Dutchman’s commanding presence in the backline. Van Dijk has not played since picking up a hamstring injury against Brentford on January 2.
However, Klopp was quick to point out that Liverpool’s injury concerns are far from over, saying: “It was important they get time, but you could see they need time. It was clear, but we knew that would happen. That’s why we tried to get them on as early as possible and allowed them some minutes.” Klopp was referring to the return of forwards Diogo Jota and Roberto Firmino, who have also been out of action due to injuries.
Liverpool will face Newcastle United in their next game, and Klopp will hope that the return of key players will help his team get back to winning ways. Klopp said: “We have to be ready for a proper fight at Newcastle. They are a difficult team to play against, but we have to be ready for that.”
