November 30, (THEWILL) – The Super Falcons played to a commanding 5-0 victory over Cape Verde in the first leg of their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) second round qualifier on Thursday. Playing at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Nigeria’s capital city Abuja, the Super Falcons were back to their accustomed dominance as reigning nine-time African champions.

Uchenna Kanu netted twice for Nigeria, with the opening goal coming in the 7th minute. Gift Monday added to the lead in the 25th minute before Kanu found the net again, making it 3-0 going into half-time. After the break, Esther Okoronkwo came off the bench and promptly scored a brace to round out the scoring for the home side.

In addition to the standout attacking display, Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie made a remarkable save to deny Cape Verde an equaliser shortly after they conceded the opening goal, highlighting the all-around strength of the Nigerian squad. They will now take a considerable advantage into the second leg scheduled for December 5 in Praia.

Nigeria went into this second qualifying round after a bye in the first round when Sao Tome and Principe pulled out of the qualifiers. Cape Verde earned their place in the second round following an aggregate victory over Liberia. However, they proved no match for the dominant Nigerians.

Should Nigeria advance, they will participate in the 2024 WAFCON to be held in Morocco, the first country to host consecutive continental competitions. If they qualify, the Super Falcons will be keen to clinch what has become an elusive 10th continental title.
