June 08, (THEWILL) – In a 1-1 draw against Germany in Nations League Group A3, Harry Kane salvaged a point for England by netting his 50th international goal with a late penalty.
Kane passed Bobby Charlton and went within three goals of Wayne Rooney’s all-time England goalscoring record by placing his spot-kick into the bottom-left corner in the 88th minute.
Jonas Hofmann had scored for Germany early in the second half, his second goal in three international appearances. But for Jordan Pickford, who made important saves to deny Thomas Muller and Timo Werner, Germany could have scored more as they dominated most of the second half.
However, England got let off the embarrassment of another loss when Kane was fouled in the box by Nico Schlotterbeck. The Tottenham striker scored a crucial goal to save England from suffering back-to-back defeats for the first time since 2018.
Kane’s 50 goals for England are more than the goals of the entire current England team and there is every chance that he will catch up with and go past Rooney’s England record.
