October 24, (THEWILL) – Arsenal emerged victorious in a challenging away match against Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, winning 2-1.
Still recovering from their unexpected loss to Lens in their last European fixture, Arsenal relied on the skilful contributions of Gabriel Jesus to inspire the club’s first UCL away win since 2015.
Jesus set up the opening goal for Gabriel Martinelli just before halftime after stealing the ball from Sevilla’s defence. The Brazilian striker then scored a spectacular goal himself early in the second half, cutting inside and curling the ball into the top corner.
Sevilla pulled one back through a powerful header from Nemanja Gudelj to make it 2-1, giving the visitors some nervous moments in the final half-hour. Despite late pressure, Arsenal held on to claim the three points and top spot in Group B although with a worrying injury to Jesus for their troubles.
Mikel Arteta strengthened his defence by bringing on centre-back Jakub Kiwior as Sevilla desperately searched for an equaliser. David Raya nearly punched a late cross into his own net but was relieved to see it go over the bar as Arsenal claimed the win.
