September 18, (THEWILL) – Everton defeated West Ham 1-0 at Goodison Park to earn their first Premier League victory of the season, with Alex Iwobi supplying the telling assist for Neal Maupay.
It was Maupay’s first Everton goal as the striker delivered a beautiful finish after the break in the penultimate top-flight game before the international break to earn the Toffees a much-needed three points and move them up to 13th in the standings.
While this eases the pressure on Frank Lampard, the loss for the Hammers extended what has been a shockingly bad start to the domestic campaign, with David Moyes’ team once again falling far short of the standards they have set in recent seasons.
Although Maxwel Cornet had two late opportunities and Said Benrahma hit the post, their frontline was once again lacking in impact. With only four points and three goals from their first seven league games, they will have to spend the next two weeks in the relegation zone.
It means the Hammers are off to their joint-worst Premier League season start as the league breaks for international duty and will be hoping for improvements when they welcome Wolverhampton Wanderers to the London Stadium on October 1.
