October 4, (THEWILL) – UEFA confirmed on Wednesday that it has received a request from the Football Associations of Italy and Turkey to merge their individual bids for Euro 2032 into a joint one. This leaves the Britain and Ireland bid as the sole candidate to host Euro 2028.
“The award of both tournaments still requires the approval of the Executive Committee at its meeting in Nyon on 10 October,” said UEFA in a statement.
The Football Associations of England, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Wales had previously submitted a joint bid to host Euro 2028. This bid became unopposed after Turkey withdrew its candidacy for Euro 2028 to focus efforts on the new shared bid with Italy for Euro 2032.
“We are looking forward to presenting our Euro 2028 bid proposal to UEFA on 10 October. These are exciting times and we have a very compelling proposal for UEFA,” a representative from the Football Association of Ireland remarked.
If approved, the joint Italy-Turkey bid would go up against any other submissions for Euro 2032. The Britain and Ireland bid for Euro 2028 would be uncontested. A decision on the hosts for both tournaments is expected following UEFA’s Executive Committee meeting next week.
