Italy, Juventus Veteran Chiellini Retires After Decorated Career

December 12, (THEWILL) – Giorgio Chiellini, the 39-year-old Italian footballing icon, has announced his retirement from professional football following his LA FC side’s defeat in the 2022 MLS Cup final over the weekend. Chiellini enjoyed a trophy-laden career including nine Serie A titles with Juventus and Euro 2020 glory with Italy.

After making his debut in 2000 for Livorno, Chiellini went on to make over 700 appearances throughout his illustrious career. He spent 17 seasons with Juventus, making 561 appearances and establishing himself as one of the best defenders of his generation before making the move to MLS side LA FC in 2022.

On his decision to retire, Chiellini said it was time to “start new chapters” in his life after an “intense journey” spanning over two decades. Juventus paid tribute to their former captain, labelling him a “superhero”, who struck fear into the hearts of opponents when he stepped onto the pitch.

As he hangs up his boots, Chiellini can look back proudly on a phenomenal career. He captained his national side to European glory and collected a whole host of domestic honours, cementing his legacy as an all-time Italian great.

Though his playing days are now over, it is the end of an era for Italian football. Chiellini’s commanding presence, passion and determination to win made him a formidable opponent for strikers across Europe. At 39, he feels the time is right to pursue new challenges.
