December 03, (THEWILL) – Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister has shed light on the heated exchange between Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola, and Reds striker, Darwin Nunez, during last month’s English Premier League clash. The midfielder explained how what started as a joke between the two spiralled into a tense confrontation on the touchline.
As Mac Allister tells it, the incident originated from a seemingly harmless comment by Guardiola after an Erling Haaland header went just wide of Liverpool’s goal. The City boss remarked that Liverpool were “lucky”, prompting Darwin Nunez to fire back in jest after the Reds narrowly avoided conceding a late winner. “Now you are the ones who are lucky”, quipped the Uruguayan striker.
What began as playful banter quickly intensified, however, as the naturally emotive Guardiola and Nunez allowed tensions to escalate. Coaching staff from both teams were forced to intervene before the spat boiled over post-match. Mac Allister himself was spotted grinning nearby, amused by Nunez’s visible irritation.
While admitting the exchange was entertaining in the moment, the Argentine midfielder was keen to emphasise there is mutual respect between the two hot-heads. “I don’t think it was anything serious,” Mac Allister clarified. With both managers having downplayed the confrontation since, this appears an isolated flare-up between two fiery competitors rather than evidence of any lingering resentment.
The Anfield club will next face City in the EPL in March next year, where Nunez and Guardiola will likely continue their personal duel for bragging rights.
