October 02, (THEWILL) – Israel and the United States have promised consequences for Iran after it fired hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel on Tuesday.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the missile attack was in response to the killing of Hezbollah Chief, Hassan Nasrallah, last week as well as that of Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh.
“This evening, Iran made a big mistake and it will pay for it,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in response to the attack.
White House National Security Adviser, Jake Sullivan, said President Joe Biden was closely tracking the developments and considering the next steps.
Tehran will face “severe consequences”, the White House said, describing the attack as a “significant escalation”.
Israel said it is deploying additional troops and tanks to southern Lebanon, where soldiers are conducting “localised” ground raids targeting Hezbollah fighters.
Britain and France said their militaries aided Israel against Iran’s missile attacks. Britain’s Defense Minister, John Healey, said British forces “played their part” to repel Tehran’s attacks.
On its part, France, which called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Wednesday, said it “participated through her military means… in countering the Iranian threat”.
Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has warned Israel and its supporters against taking “any new action”, saying it would spark a “tougher response” from Iran.
