September 26, (THEWILL) – Ipswich Town produced a heroic comeback from two goals down to knock English Premier League Wolverhampton Wanderers out of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night. The 3-2 victory at Portman Road was secured, thanks to a second-half goal from Jack Taylor after Omari Hutchinson and Freddie Ladapo had started the fightback in the first half.
Despite the raucous home crowd, Wolves raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 15 minutes through strikes from Hwang Hee-Chan and Toti Gomes. However, Hutchinson pulled one back on 28 minutes to give Ipswich hope going into the break. Ladapo then equalised just before half-time to set up a grandstand finish.
The winner came 13 minutes into the second half when Taylor unleashed a thunderous 25-yard effort that flew past Wolves keeper Dan Bentley. Ipswich defended resiliently thereafter as Wolves threw players forward, with keeper Vaclav Hladky making some key saves.
It was a historic night for Ipswich manager, Kieran McKenna, securing his first victory over top-flight opposition since taking over last season. After gaining promotion from League One in 2021/2022, his side have continued their fine form this campaign.
The result dumped Wolves out at the third round stage as their early season struggles went on under new boss Gary O’Neil. Ipswich marched onto the fourth round for the first time since 2010, capping off a famous night for the Suffolk club.
