October 5, (THEWILL) – Inter defeated Barcelona 1-0 in the Champions League thanks to a spectacular goal by Hakan Calhanoglu, moving them into second place in Group C.
On Tuesday at San Siro, after a spirited play by both sides appeared to be headed to a goalless first half and after the Nerazzurri had already had a goal disallowed, Calhanoglu beat Marc-Andre ter Stegen in extra time of the first half.
The second half saw the La Liga leaders play now purposefully and directly, only to have a goal of their own disallowed when Pedri’s tap-in was effectively struck out for an Ansu Fati handball in the lead-up to the goal.
However, the hard-battling Simone Inzaghi’s team, despite some late pressure and a Barca penalty appeal, managed to hold on to pick all three points, moving them ahead of the Catalan heavyweights in the group so far.
In the race to reach beyond the group stage, this pair of European football powerhouses will meet again in Catalonia but before that, Inter will travel to Sassuolo this weekend while Barca host Celta Vigo.
