Intense Pressure Takes Toll On Xavi’s Mental Health As Barcelona Coach

January 30, (THEWILL) – Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez has admitted feeling “worthless” at the Catalan club, despite achieving significant success since taking over in late 2021. In a shock announcement following a heavy defeat to Villarreal, the 44-year-old revealed he will step down at the end of this season – only four months after signing a contract extension to 2025.

Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s La Liga fixture with Osasuna, Xavi explained his decision came from feeling underappreciated and worn down by the intense demands of being Barcelona boss. “I think the work has not been valued enough and this causes wear and tear on me. This is my feeling,” he stated, adding that he already suspected last summer that 2023/2024 would be his final campaign in charge.

The former midfield maestro even compared notes with former manager Pep Guardiola, who despite tremendous achievements walked away in 2012 to take a sabbatical. Xavi highlighted the cruel nature of the job, making one feel “worthless every day”. He also echoed suggestions it is “impossible” to match Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year tenure at Manchester United.

Only three Barcelona coaches this century have lasted more than three seasons, with Xavi reaching breaking point despite leading the club to the League title in his first season. The legendary player promised he “will have me for whatever they need”, but for now believes his work is underappreciated and a change in leadership next season will “help the dynamic change” at the club he loves.
