BEVERLY HILLS, June 04, (THEWILL) – Ahead of the international friendly between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon on Friday, the Antonio Oliveira Conceicao-led team is running out of options to man the post behind their defenders as the two first choice options recently became unavailable for the friendly at Vienna’s Stadion Wiener Neustadt in Austria. Then, the third
Blondy Noukeu, the Lions’ Stoke City goalkeeper was not able to be capped for the encounter having been ruled out due to injury. The press officer of the Indomitable Lions confirmed this when he said: “The goalkeeper of Stoke City sent the doctor of the national team, Professor Ngatchou, a medical certificate declaring him unfit because of back pain.”
His place was to be taken by the Dutch League-based Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper Andre Onana. But, Onana was unavailable for the game so that the responsibility of keeping the goal fell on Fabrice Ondoa, goalkeeper for La Liga’s Deportivo Alaves.
It was learnt that in training on Tuesday, Ondoa injured his finger. It was considered not damaging enough to keep him out but as it still stings on Friday, it has become necessary to have Ondoa sit out the friendly match.
However, Cameroon’s press officer added that Ondoa could be available for the second friendly on June 8. Meanwhile, for Friday’s match, Omossola Simon (As Vita Club) and Devis Epassy (Pas Lamia, Greece) are the two goalkeepers available for selection against the Super Eagles.
They may not be first choice but now have the opportunity to stake a claim for themselves and demonstrate why they must be considered as choice keepers in their own right as well.
