December 16, (THEWILL) – The Club World Cup will grow to 32 teams starting in 2025, according to FIFA.
The Club World Cup has significantly expanded to mimic the atmosphere of a World Cup. Originally, it was a competition only for the champions of the host country and the major club competition winners from each continent.
However, Gianni Infantino, the FIFA President, has confirmed the expansion saying: “The new men’s Club World Cup will take place in 2025 and will feature 32 teams. The 32-team tournament will go ahead, making it like a World Cup.”
Before the previous edition of the event was postponed due to COVID-19, there were intentions to increase the tournament to 24 teams, however, FIFA has outdone itself with a new, even bigger structure for 2025.
The Super Cup is currently held by Chelsea after they defeated Palmeiras in February, but Real Madrid, the current UEFA Champions League holders, will lead the charge for Europe in 2022, according to Infantino, who also announced that the next competition will take place in Morocco, in March.
