SAN FRANCISCO, February 20, (THEWILL) – A pro-Buhari group in Yobe State, the Buhari Youth Organisation has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to allow the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) brings its name into disrepute.
It advised that for the electoral body to been seen by all as been as a just umpire, INEC must be firm and resist all the attempts by PDP to have its way during the rescheduled general elections as it alleged that the PDP is bent on having little or no change in past electoral procedures which is not immune against manipulation and which the PDP had used to a great advantage in the past.
Speaking at a media briefing in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital, the state chairman of the organisation, Hon. Bashir Bukar Ba’ale, stated that his organisation had accepted in good faith the postponement of the February 2015 elections but warned that there should be no further shift in the polls.
According to Baale, “Evidence given for the shift in the date of elections are not sufficient but since INEC acted within the ambit of law, we have accepted the postponement in good fate but any further postponement is an insurgency to democracy.”
He said despite the security challenges facing the state and the North- east, the Yobe state Independent Electoral Commission conducted a successful Local Government Election in 2013, stressing that there shouldn’t be any excuse for INEC to hide under the escuse of insecurity to further postpone the elections.
Expressing confidence in the capability of the country’s security agencies , urging them not to allow the PDP led government to discredit them in the democratisation process of the country, Ba’ale said it was commendable that the distribution of the permanent voter cards (PVCs) in Yobe state has recorded 80 percent success even with the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) collecting their PVCs.
He also said his group would not welcome any imposition of an interim national government on the country, adding that the use of card readers for the rescheduled elections should be encouraged .
